Me vs Others
A photographic experiment that explores the curation of one’s “self” image

Me vs Others is a series of self-portraits shot by Laurence Philomene through the bodies of others — friends, loved ones, and artists met on travels. These self-portraits are at times autobiographical, and at times entirely fictional. With this project, the author plays with photography as a space where the line between what is staged and what isn’t gets blurred; a space where we assume what we perceive to be real. Working on this project for several years, a sense of dissonance has increasingly appeared between this created image of the “self” and reality — I grow and change, but the character remains the same. Over time, the images have become less about identifying others as the author, and more about the loss of self that comes with curating a virtual/visual identity.
